Ah! India! The vast Subcontinent! Another pinhead (big one) on the map of our conference destinations at the far corners of the world! This time we’re joining our colleagues from ISABE for the 27th edition of the International Society of Air-Breathing Engines.
This is also the story of a new flame.
The MOeBIUS principle is based on the recursive sequential combution, where the annular combustor is used to return burned gases in the next flame. The flow dynamics generate an intertwinned system of spiral flames that design a donut. This flame is operated lean, and presents unique features in the low-NOx and extended lean range that is of interest for the aviation sector.

Mrs Hoffer from Combustion Bay One e.U. will present the flames analysed in the frame of the MOeBIUS.H project, with fuels such as hydrocarbons or hydrogen. Provided we successfully climb all the TRL steps towards the flying principle - and we have good reasons to believe that we will - MOeBIUS offers the possibility to reduce the combustor length by 25%.
Our presentation:
- Monday September 21rst, 16.00; session 2E "Combustor 2", Room Prithvi.
- Experimental validation of Recursive Sequential Combustion in a constant section configuration for airborne applications. Hofer, A., Giuliani, F., Burgzorg, D., & Paulitsch, N. V. M. In proceedings of the 27th ISABE Conference (International Society of Air Breathing Engines), Mumbai, India. ISABE 2026 Propelling the Future: Airbreathing Propulsion and the Next Generation of Aerospace Engineers.
We would like to thank the FFG (Austrian Agency for Research Promotion) and the BMVIT (Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology) for their financial support of the projects presented.
