The infrared measurement technique at the LPP test rig of the DLR Cologne (Giuliani et al., ECM 2007)
Infrared absorption is specific to alcanes. Thus, with a specific apparatus, one can determine the effectiveness of combined fuel atomisation and vaporisation. In a word, one can cartography the fuel placement.
This technique was adapted to compare the fuel placement between several replacement fuels for aviation, in the ALFA-BIRD project. The validation of this technique was presented at the ASME Turbo Expo 2011 in Vancouver. Then it was published in the Journal of engineering for Gas Turbines and Power.
