The topic we will present is
Gas Turbine Combustion with Variable Geometry
Dr. Fabrice GIULIANI,
Dr. Thomas LEITGEB-SIMANDL
On a conventional gas turbine, the parameter which is set for a given operation is the fuel burn - a direct image of the thermal power required. Usually the fuel is distributed on a pilot and a main line. As the operation point changes, the distribution is set to provide the thermal power, ensure combustion stability together with low emissions.
We studied the opposite option: it is not the flame that is adapted to the operation - it is the combustor that deforms and adapts to the flame. This is called variable geometry, an alternative to staged combustion.
Variable geometry offers advantages versus conventional in terms of extended operation range, control of the flame front position and shape, retarding the transition from detached to attached flame, and pushing forward the lean blowout limit.
This presentation is inspired from works realised by authors at TU Graz from 2007 to 2013 in the frame of the NEWAC research project (EU FP 6, 2006-2011, contract AIP5-CT-2006-030876). For more details please consult the following bibliography:
