What it takes to rule the H

Papers GT2022-80886 and GT2022-82420 at ASME Turbo Expo 2022 (Conference Talk)

Mrs Hofer and Mrs Paulitsch from CBOne will present their research published in two papers in Rotterdam at the ASME Turbo Expo 2022 Conference, June 13 - 17, 2022. While Hydrogen combustion is clearly at the heart of one technology called Bluetifuel, the second technology called MOeBIUS is an up-and-coming option for the design of lightweight, compact, and very high energy density combustion chambers in future hydrogen-powered aeronautical propulsion systems.

 H2llo you :)

Our latest updates on Pure Hydrogen Combustion (Bluetifuel project, FFG / ClimaFonds Energy Call 2019 / Contract Nr. 881129 in partnership with P&P Industries AG and FH JOANNEUM GmbH / Aviation) and on Recursive Sequential Combustion (MOeBIUS project, FFG / Take-Off call 2019 / Contract 881041) will be presented:

 Beat + H2 + IT = BLUETIFUEL

Paper GT2022-80688 BLUETIFUEL (Blue Flames for Low Emission Combustion Using Non-Carbon Eco-Fuels) focuses on the thermal exploitation of non-carbon eco-fuels produced as a storable form of available surplus renewable energy. BLUETIFUEL is developed in cooperation with P&P Industries AG and FH JOANNEUM GmbH and financed by FFG in collaboration with the Austrian Climate Funds. This project helps decarbonise combustion processes under lean premixed conditions. The combustion performance in the lean burn domain is augmented using forced pulsed combustion (using a siren) to circumscribe the flame location, prevent flashbacks and flameout, and extend the operating range in a safe, practical and flexible manner.

The MOeBIUS combustor: welcome into the ring of fire!

Paper GT2022-82420 MOeBIUS (Momentum-Enhanced Blend of the Reactants With Recirculated Burnt Gases) is a combustion chamber design concept for lean and robust low emission combustion. The design is refined using CFD and developed using FFG grants. The recursive sequential combustion technology that powers MOeBIUS is presented. It involves arranging burners behind each other in a circle so burnt gases emitted by one burner are partially fed into the next flame. This highly heat conservative hot core generates robust lean combustion, with improved NOx performance due to the reburn effect.
